Where to stay
Curitiba

If you’re staying for a few days, we recommend making Curitiba your base.

It’s where Patricia grew up, where we met, and where many of our Brazilian guests will be staying. You’ll have plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars and things to explore, and it’s the best option if you’d like to experience a little of the city while you’re here.

Our wedding-day transfer to Sabiá Laranjeira will also depart from central Curitiba.

We’re currently talking to a few hotels about special rates for our guests. Stay tuned — we’ll share the details here as soon as they’re confirmed.

São José dos Pinhais

If you’re coming mainly for the wedding, this might be the easier option.

São José dos Pinhais is where Afonso Pena International Airport is located. It’s closer to Sabiá Laranjeira than central Curitiba and accommodation tends to be more affordable.

It’s a practical choice if you’re arriving shortly before the wedding or flying home soon afterwards and don’t mind being outside the centre of Curitiba.

One thing to keep in mind: our organised wedding transfer will depart from Curitiba, so if you stay in São José dos Pinhais, you’ll need to arrange your own transportation to Sabiá.

WHILE YOU’RE HERE

A few places we love

If you’re coming all this way, we hope you’ll have some time to explore. Curitiba is where Patricia grew up and where we met, so we’ve put together a few of our favourite places and things to do while you’re here.

Beautiful views, lots of nature, and somewhere we almost always visit when we’re back.

Make sure to get a caldo de cana (fresh sugarcane juice) from the kiosk by the entrance.

EAT & DRINK

Eat & drink
Largo da Ordem
Jardins Grill

Experience a proper Brazilian rodízio — all-you-can-eat barbecue, with different cuts of meat brought straight to your table.

Expert tip: go easy on the buffet. You’ll want to save room for the meat.

Pastel Juvevê
Pastelaria Brasileira

You’ll find plenty of great pastéis in Curitiba, but this is one of our favourites.

Pati's order: carne, queijo e palmito Matti's: carne seca e queijo

Largo da Ordem
Dois Corações

You can’t leave Brazil without eating a coxinha. Dois Corações has a few locations around the city centre and does a very good one without any fuss.

Pati always gets the chicken and catupiry one. Matti is firmly anti-catupiry.

Largo da Ordem
Fire Dog

Brazilian hot dogs may change your idea of what a hot dog can be. They’re loaded with toppings, gloriously excessive, and nothing like the ones you’re used to in Europe.

We usually go for a traditional one or the giant special that genuinely serves two.

Largo da Ordem
Cantinho da Bica

Another Brazilian classic you have to try is feijoada, a rich black bean and pork stew. Cantinho da Bica is a great place to have it.

Saturday is feijoada day in Brazil — come hungry.

We can happily spend hours around Largo da Ordem. There are plenty of bars — just find a free table, order a drink and settle in.

For the full experience: a beer tower and mandioca frita com bacon to share.

Cana Benta

Live music, a tower of Brazilian bar food and dangerously good caipirinhas.

Try the jabuticaba caipirinha if you fancy something different.

Literally the third place we went dancing together, and we go back every time we have a chance.

You don't pay the entrance fee if you arrive early. Check the website to see the time.

GO A LITTLE FURTHER

If you have a few extra days
Morretes
Morretes / train from Curitiba

Take the scenic train from Curitiba through the Serra do Mar and eat barreado once you arrive in Morretes.

Tip: take the bus back — the train is beautiful, but slow.

Ilha do Mel
Ilha do Mel

One of the most beautiful escapes on the Paraná coast: beaches, trails and lots of protected nature, with no cars on the island.

You’ll need to take a ferry to get there, so pack light.

Florianópolis
Florianópolis

If you have a few more days, head south to Florianópolis for beautiful beaches, great food and plenty of surfing, whether you want waves or something a little calmer.

Matti talks about moving here so often that it might actually happen one day.

Florianópolis
Foz do Iguaçu

The falls are spectacular, and Parque das Aves is absolutely worth a visit too.

We went by bus once. It took 12 hours. Take a flight. If you have time, cross over to Paraguay for some low-tax muamba.
